High Plains Camping Oakley KansasHigh Plains Camping, Oakley Kansas

We spent one night at High Plains Camping in Oakley Kansas.  It was a stressful day getting there with the check engine light going on again. John changed a filter in the O’Reilly’s parking lot on the way down to this park.

The park itself seemed nice, and we were way out in a pull through site.  There seemed to be several overnight campers with us, and it was pretty quiet, except for the wind.  The wind was pretty bad when we arrived and a good part of the night, something that we are not used to.  Also got bitten several times by something – not sure how they could have landed on us in that wind!

The park had all the regular amenities, and even a cafe, but it was closed by the time we arrived, plus it was a Sunday evening.  It was conveniently right off the highway, and easy to find.

Our stay before this – Monument, Colorado.  Our stay after this – Wichita Kansas

About the Oakley Kansas area

Oakley sits at the crossroads of I-70, U.S. 83, and U.S. 40 in northwest Kansas, making it an ideal stop for travelers heading east–west or north–south through the High Plains. Known for its welcoming small-town atmosphere and wide skies, Oakley combines frontier history with unexpected natural wonders. Whether you’re passing through on a road trip or planning an extended stay, you’ll find plenty to explore in and around this rural community (visitoakleyks.com, travelks.com).

Outdoor attractions around Oakley highlight the region’s unique geology and prairie landscapes. Monument Rocks, also called the Chalk Pyramids, rise dramatically from the plains and make for a memorable photo stop and short hike (tripadvisor.com). Nearby Smoky Valley Ranch offers trails through badlands terrain where you can spot wildlife and take in wide vistas (kansascountryinn.com). For anglers and hikers, Lake Scott State Park provides fishing, boating, and scenic trails amid rolling hills and woodlands. Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park, a bit farther afield, features striking rock formations and peaceful camping spots for those seeking solitude under dark skies (kansascountryinn.com). If you enjoy golf, the Oakley Golf Course gives a pleasant round with views of the surrounding plains.

History and culture are woven into Oakley’s community offerings. The Fick Fossil & History Museum houses world-class fossils, including a Tylosaurus Proriger skull, and exhibits on local heritage free of charge during regular hours (cityofoakleyks.gov). The Buffalo Bill Cultural Center explores the legacy of the West and its legendary figures, giving insight into the region’s past. The Butterfield Trail Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserves county records and stories dating back to frontier days. Strolling Oakley’s downtown, you may also encounter murals and local shops offering artisan goods that reflect the area’s roots and community spirit.

Throughout the year, Oakley hosts events that invite visitors to join in local traditions. Annual gatherings like the Logan County Fair, Tri-County Cruiser Car Show, and seasonal craft shows provide a taste of small-town festivities. For family-friendly entertainment, you can catch a movie, go bowling, or experience weekly cattle sales and monthly chicken fries at the VFW, embracing the “get rural” charm of the area. These events are a great way to meet residents, sample regional cuisine, and take part in activities you won’t find in larger cities.
